Minakshi Mishra
Senior Psychologist
Under the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) regulations of 2026, psychologists outside clinical and rehabilitation psychology move into a formal registration system. You register with a State Council, receive a Unique Identification Number valid for five years, and must complete 15 CPD hours every year (75 over five years), with no more than half done online, to renew. Clinical psychologists stay under the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI)

Who needs NCAHP registration?
NCAHP registration is for psychologists whose work falls outside clinical and rehabilitation psychology, such as counselling, organisational, educational, developmental, or social psychology, depending on your qualification pathway. A psychology degree on its own does not make you registered. Registration is a separate step.
Clinical psychologists: you remain under the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI). NCAHP registration is not an alternative route to clinical registration, and registration with one body does not replace the other.
Counsellors, therapists, and psychotherapists: whether the titles "counsellor" and "therapist" fall under this system depends on the notification's categories and your qualification pathway and is not settled by this article. Check the official notification before assuming you are, or aren't, covered. See our guide: NCAHP Rules 2026 vs. 2021: what changed for psychologists.
Foreign-qualified psychologists: the framework describes registration for foreign-qualified professionals too, including temporary and full registration.
NCAHP eligibility: which qualifications count?
Eligibility is set by the notification, not by the university that awarded your degree. The regulations list recognized qualification pathways, and some also require experience in a health setting. Reported conditions, to be verified against the notification
Pathway | Reported requirement |
|---|---|
Graduate (for example, B.Sc. / BA in psychology or applied psychology) | 3 years' course (4 years for B.Psych) plus health-setting experience, generally 3 to 4 years |
Postgraduate (master's in psychology or applied psychology) | A two-year master's plus about 2 years of health-setting experience |
Diploma and advanced diploma | 1-year course plus 1 to 2 years of health-setting experience |
PhD | A master's in psychology or applied psychology as a prerequisite |
Points to check before you apply:
Course duration matters. The notification refers to two-year master's programs. Whether one-year master's degrees qualify is unclear.
The experience condition is separate from the degree. "I have the degree" is not enough on pathways that require health-setting experience.
Distance-education graduates: the position is not clearly described in the sources we reviewed. Ask the State Council or the Commission.
Interim registration for students
Students who need an internship, training, or observership as part of their course are expected to hold interim registration before the placement starts. This is different from final professional registration, and treating the two as the same can cause problems later.
How to apply for NCAHP registration (and apply online)
The process, as described in the regulations:
Confirm your pathway. Match your qualification and experience to the recognized list.
Gather documents: degree and mark sheets, proof of health-setting experience where required, identity proof, and photographs.
Apply to the State Council using the prescribed form and fee. Ask the council whether applications are online (the Commission's portal issues the UID) or through the State Council. [VERIFY the exact online route]
Verification. The council checks the documents and the qualification and accepts or rejects the application within a set period.
Entry in the registers and your UID. Registration to practice is established once your name is entered in the state and central registers and a UID is issued. The Certificate of Registration carries your UID and a QR code.
CPD hours: what you must complete
15 hours a year, 75 hours over five years.
Online cap: no more than 50% of your CPD can be online. The rest must be in person.
Evidence: keep certificates of attendance or completion. You submit CPD evidence when you renew.
Plan it: treat CPD as an ongoing record, not a one-time task. Keep certificates in one place alongside your other practice records.
Renewal: when and how
Apply 6 months before your registration expires, using Form R-3, with the renewal fee, CPD evidence, and required documents. Paying the fee alone is not enough.
Put the date in your calendar now. If your registration is valid for five years, your renewal window opens six months before the fifth anniversary.
If registration lapses, it becomes inactive, and you cannot practice as a registered psychologist while it is inactive.
I already practice. What happens to me?
The framework describes provisional registration for professionals who were already working before the system existed, which is different from interim registration for students. Practitioners who do not meet the new qualification criteria may be covered by "professional arrangements," but the procedure, time frame, and documents are not specified in the sources we reviewed and should come from the Commission's own instructions. Until you have clear guidance, keep records of your qualifications, work experience, and training.
